About the book
The book A Student’s Key to Ancient Greek Thought was originally written to provide African students of philosophy with a short introduction to the engaging theme of the development of ancient Greek philosophy and science.
The author, Gerhard Rauche, had it originally published in 1966 at the University of Fort Hare, where he was the first professor of philosophy.
The book was successfully used as prescribed text over the course of more than three decades. Other South African universities, such as Durban-Westville and the University of the North (Turfloop) have also used the book on their prescribed and/or recommended reading lists.

A note on the University of Fort Hare: It is the second oldest university for Africans on the continent, and a highly esteemed institution as it played host to many African leaders and statesmen, including Nelson Mandela, the first president of the post-1994 South Africa. The university’s website is www.ufh.ac.za and the institution is still going strong.
